Dental Implants

Why have dental implants?

  • If you have lost one or more of your natural teeth removed, dental implants can be an excellent option to fill those spaces.
  • Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth or all of your teeth.
  • Dental implants are titanium screws placed into the jaw where the tooth root used to be located. The screw fuses with the bone in your jaw and serves as a strong anchor to attach to replacement teeth.
  • Implants allow you to chew food normally, help prevent bone loss in your jaw and improve speech when compared to traditional dentures.
  • Dental Implants can also last a lifetime.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Because a dental implant feels and looks like a normal tooth, it can really enhance your life.
  • Not only is a dental implant aesthetically beautiful butit can improve eating and speaking.
  • Implants can also replace the need to prep unrestored teeth during a single implant placement, compared to that of making a bridge restoration.
  • Oral health can also be improved using dental implants as cleaning underneath a bridge can be tricky to do well, whereas cleaning around a single implant is like cleaning any other of your natural teeth.

What is the procedure for having Dental Implants?

Single teeth implants are usually performed in stages, with healing time in between procedures. Typical stages of a dental implant placement include:

  • Damaged tooth removal
  • Jawbone preparation (grafting), when needed
  • Dental implant placement
  • Bone growth and healing
  • Abutment placement
  • Artificial tooth placement

The entire process can take several months from start to finish although some stages can be combined depending on your individual circumstances.

Dental Implant FAQs

How do I care for a Dental Implant?

Just like with natural teeth implants require good oral health habits for them to be a success. Our hygienists can provide you with advice and recommend the correct products to help you keep your implant clean and healthy. Regular check-ups are needed to ensure that there are no underlying problems arising around your implant. Good oral healthcare can be the difference between your implant failing or staying for life.

What is a bone graft and when would I need one?

If your jawbone isn’t thick enough or is too soft, you may need bone grafting before you can have a dental implant. A bone graft can create a more solid base for the implant.

The material of a bone graft is a synthetic bone-substitute material that can provide support structures for new bone growth. If only minor bone grafting is required, this can often be completed on the date you have your implant placed.
